“Spiritual spouses” are absolutely real demonic entities out to do the business of the devil: steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10).
They are perhaps referred to as “spouse” due to their stubbornness and the way in which they primarily defile, sexually.
“that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and desirable; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose and desired. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive and remain with man forever, because he is indeed flesh [sinful, corrupt—given over to sensual appetites]; nevertheless his days shall yet be a hundred and twenty years.” – Genesis 6:2-3
While the term is no where to be found in the Bible, Genesis 6:2 makes it clear that interaction, even sexual in nature, between spiritual beings and humans is absolutely possible.
Even though this is a stubborn problem to break free from, a believer is certainly equipped, by the grace of God, to break free from their oppression and molestation. Like any addiction, the believer must hunger and thirst for righteousness. The believer must demand and fight for their purity in all things in God. Believers remain in bondage for lack of knowledge and/or from entertaining, not fighting against or not fighting for their freedom.
Obviously, “spiritual spouses” affect unbelievers. But an unbeliever is powerless to break free from their grip. They must first become born again and the Holy Spirit will equip them to fight.
As mentioned, “spirit spouses” affect Christians. Many, including Christians, either believe what’s happening to them is a normal part of life, or just too ashamed to talk about it. Neither group will gain freedom if they remain in their line of thinking.
Since the ultimate goal of these demons is to steal, kill and destroy, the believer will notice things like confusion, set back or delay, relationship problems, shame, depression, unquenchable lusts or dissatisfaction in their lives.
One of the primary ways they inflict is through rape or seduction during sleep. For some, these moments may be unwanted, but pleasurable, thus bringing shame. For others, the demons present themselves as the individual’s living spouse, leaving the individual unsuspecting and open to their defilement. If the individual is married, they will soon find their marriage in shambles. The married person engaging with the demon may find it more pleasurable with the demon than with their actual spouse. This is one of the biggest red flag that it is a demon. Anything that seeks to bring division or discontentment in an actual marriage is operating from an anti-Christ spirit. Their spouse will soon pick up on this discontentment and will altogether either feel rejected or disgusted and avoid wanting to be intimate with their spouse altogether.
A “spiritual spouse” if it can’t get to delay someone from getting married, when that person is married, it will operate to destroy the marriage. They will hide, and then present themselves whenever the real life couple seek to get closer together. So a husband after having sex with his wife, if he is a victim or in bondage to a “spirit spouse”, may get a visitation after being with his wife. Many times these wicked demons will present themselves as the person’s actual spouse to cause them to think it is normal. This however is not normal. The only sex an individual should be having is sex with their real life spouse. Any sex outside of marriage, even in the dream world, is sin and defiles the marriage bed. It’s like nighttime pornography.
Spirit spouses also seek to kill the real life offspring of a couple. They want to produce their own offspring of destruction like delay, shame, confusion etc.
Lack of knowledge and lack of desire for complete and total righteousness is what prevents people from receiving their freedom. Anyone who wants to break free from any demonic oppression must be hungry and spiritually violent for their freedom (Matthew 11:12). We must agree with the Word of God, pray and not play the compare game. It doesn’t matter who else it happens to, once we know the truth we should live in it (Galatians 5:1).
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” Hosea 4:6
